Megan Hamby, writer/editor, graduated in 2011 from Middle Tennessee State University with a degree in journalism, and like every good new journalist, she got a job in retail. Before landing at Hammock, she also spent a couple of years in book publishing. Our early bird millennial recently regaled us with a few details about her life:
What is the first thing you do when you wake up and/or get in the office each morning?
I’m always the first person in the office. I could be an awesome employee and get the coffee started every morning, but I haven’t figured out how the coffeemaker works. The first thing I do is check emails and make a to-do list for the day. I get more done in those first couple of hours than I do the rest of the day.
How do you divide your time each day between projects? Do you set aside specific hours to work on certain things, or do you just play it by ear and see what needs the most attention?
In an ideal world, I would divide my time up and organize my day that way, but that’s not exactly realistic. Someone (coughJamiecough) usually gives me something to proof that wasn’t on my original list. So I guess I play it by ear, even though that’s not what I love.
What’s your favorite organizational tool, whether electronic or otherwise?
My calendar is in my phone, but I’m old school and still carry an actual planner. I also color-code my email inbox folders.
How would you describe your social media habits to an alien visiting our planet for the first time?
Don’t judge me for live-tweeting #TheBachelor. I’m on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. But I’m not one of those people who takes pictures of food at restaurants and uses the #foodie hashtag. I also don’t like selfies, mostly because my arms are too short and I don’t need a camera closeup. I downloaded Snapchat one day and it confused me and made me feel old, so I deleted it.
How do you spend your time when you’re not in the office?
I think this surprises many people, but I love sports, specifically hockey and baseball. You can usually find me watching the Nashville Predators, Atlanta Braves and even the Nashville Sounds play. If I’m not at a game, I’m probably watching on TV. I even have a Shea Weber-signed puck from the 2016 NHL All-Star game on my desk.
But I want to be a well-rounded individual, so I watch “The Bachelor” every Monday night. 🙂 I also enjoy cooking and baking, spending time with my husband, and reading.
What’s one thing your coworkers don’t know about you?
I’m terrified of fish. I mean, absolutely terrified. I love the beach, but I have to give myself a pep talk before even stepping foot in the ocean. They’re slimy and funny looking, and I can’t stand them. I don’t even eat fish.
What’s your favorite travel destination?
I love Kiawah Island in South Carolina. It’s not too far from Charleston, which is my favorite city. I grew up going with my family, and I’m going again this summer. It’s quiet and relaxing and not your typical beach town. But I really want to go to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I think that would also be in my top three favorite places.
