Contrary to popular belief, we don’t spend all of our time at Hammock Headquarters in downtown Nashville. When we’re not in the office, you can often find us spending time outdoors, watching a sporting event or catching a concert at one of many Nashville music venues.
Before and after hours, our fearless leader Rex enjoys riding his bike to and from the office. “I try hard to do it at least twice a week,” he says. “In 2017, my goal is three. I started doing this about four years ago and it has become a part of my life—a good part. And certainly one of the most fun parts—except when people blow their car horns at me.”
But Rex isn’t the only one who enjoys being outdoors. Our designers, Kerri and Lynne, both love staying active outside. Kerri likes to hike nearby parks and walk and run for exercise. In the summers, you can probably find her relaxing by the pool or spending time with her husband. Lynne enjoys biking with her friends, and she’s also an avid swimmer. Speaking of swimming, Lena does it weekly with a local swim team. She hasn’t competed yet, unless you count competing for craziest person ever by doing a polar bear plunge (water temperature: 38 degrees).
We’re all big fans of our pets, too. Lynne and Taylor close out the day in the same fashion: Walking their dogs around their neighborhoods. Natalie enjoys spending time with her cuddly, yet rambunctious, puppy (see right).
Taylor’s the traveler: She loves taking weekend trips, and she’s not picky about where she goes. Whether it’s the beach or the mountains, she’s just happy to get away. She especially loves hiking in Highlands, North Carolina, or spending time on the boat in Perdido, Florida.
You may be surprised to learn that John—president and COO—is our resident comedian. He’s performed his own stand-up comedy routines at Nashville venues like Zanies and the Tin Cup, always earning a laugh. We’re lucky we get to hear his jokes for free every Monday–Friday in the office.
We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the Nashville music scene. In March 2016, Emily had the opportunity to attend a taping for “CMT Crossroads” with Cheap Trick and Jennifer Nettles. Watch a re-run of the episode, and you may catch Emily singing and clapping on the second row (see left). Julia also catches a lot of concerts—she’s seen rock stars such as Bob Seger, Elton John and Tom Petty and country-western legends such as Willie Nelson and George Strait. Her most recent, awe-inspiring concert experience was when she saw Adele at Bridgestone Arena in 2016. “Her concert felt like a very personal experience,” Julia says. “I don’t believe there was a moment of silence in the concert. If she wasn’t singing, she was talking and telling stories. When she sang ‘Set Fire to the Rain,’ she stood in the middle of pouring rain!”
We embrace Nashville sports, too, whether it’s hockey, football or baseball. Megan and her husband have season tickets to watch the Nashville Predators play (see right). Her favorite memory? “It was game four of the second round in playoffs,” she says. “We were playing the San Jose Sharks and the game had gone to triple overtime. The game didn’t end until after 1 a.m., but we won. It was an exhilarating, but exhausting game.” Steve also enjoys Nashville sports—you can often find him cheering the Tennessee Titans on to victory.
When the weather gets warmer, you can find Jamie and her husband at baseball games. For now, though, she’s hibernating and watching as many Oscar and film festival award nominees as she can. If she’s not watching Oscar winners—or throwing a viewing party to watch the Oscars—she’s probably reading for her book club.
